Who We Are

SBCCS is an elementary charter school located in the Hunts Point/Longwood section of the South Bronx.   We are committed to ensuring the academic success of children in the South Bronx by focusing on the fundamental goals of early education - reading, writing, arithmetic, and behavior - and providing the key structural elements necessary to the success of each student:

Culture of Academic Achievement:
We believe that an organized, clear, and sequential curriculum best serves our scholars.  Reading, in particular, is the most important part of an SBCCS education, and our curriculum focuses on language development as a critical need of our target population.

Clear Code of Conduct:
Within a disciplined environment, teachers are able to teach and scholars are able to learn.   We create positive student behavior through modeling and explicit behavioral instruction through our Character Education program.  We strictly enforce discipline through a positive and transparent set of expectations shared with families and students at orientations and throughout the year.  These rules include recognition of the school's core values and clear consequences for infractions.

Focus on Literacy:
We believe that a focus on literacy mechanics, comprehension, and fluency is a primary task of early elementary education.  Our scholars get nearly 3 hours per day of literacy instruction.

Extended School Day and Year:
Students benefit from approximately 20% more instructional time.

Data-Driven Instruction:
We regularly assess scholars and use that data to inform further instruction.  Strong test results may be the effect of good instruction, but good instruction is also the effect of a focus on test results.
